I managed to get in three 1 hr sessions at the gym last week. My trial with them is over so I need to figure out my next steps. I really enjoyed going and using all of the machines. I don’t ever see myself joining one of their classes and I have hand weights at home that I can use. But I don’t have the space or the money to set up an exercise bike, and elliptical machine and a treadmill. What I did realize this week is that I still have a few day passes for the Dartmouth Sportsplex that I haven’t used. They have all the same machines available, and since I’ve already paid for it, I’m going to use them up before I commit to a gym membership.
I had a great week of good food choices. One of the things that I like about choosing a healthy lifestyle versus being on a diet, is that I don’t limit myself from having good tasting, bad for me things as long as it’s in moderation (no more sitting down to eat a whole bag of chips). So I did enjoy 2 small Cinnabons this week and didn’t feel at all guilty about it. I tracked it in MFP, accepted that my calories were high that day and moved on.
So between the exercise and the good eating I thought I would show a loss on the scale when I weighed in Sunday morning. I was pleasantly surprised with a 2.5 lb loss! That puts me at 7 lbs lost so far this year.
My plan this week is to get to the gym at least 3 times, walk with my friend Nicole (who just signed up to run her first 5k this summer at the Ocean Breeze!) and to keep eating well. Hilary has some great sounding meals planned, which is helping us to not eat out nearly as much as we had been last year. I’m sure cutting down on fast food is playing a big role in my weight loss too.
I’ve also decided to set myself a running goal. I looked back at the results of all the 5ks I’ve run in the past 3 years. My fastest run was in April 2014 with a chip time of 41:59. The last 5k I ran was 47:08. So my goal for this year is to run a 5k in under 40 minutes. It’s a big stretch to try to improve my time by over 7 minutes from last year, but I’m feeling good about it.
And with any luck, the snow will eventually melt, the sidewalks will be clear and I can get outside again.

Weigh In - April 27
Last Weigh In - 219.8
Current Weight - 219.8
Weight Lost - 0
I was pretty hesitant to get on the scale again. It has been nearly 2 weeks since my last weigh in and during that time I had a lovely visit from my MIL which involved lots of yummy meals at home, eating out, wine and a more than a couple of martinis. In the middle of her visit we also had Easter which involved a lot of chocolate and Peeps. There was also very little exercise in the last 2 weeks.
I was pleasantly surprised to find that I had not gained any weight and had stayed the same.
So now the journey continues. My goals are to run 4 days a week, to get back to TKD on a regular basis and to eat well. Becka from Fat to Happy shared a FB group called Mileage May that I've also joined. My goal is to walk/run 5 miles a day (approx. 10,000 steps) every day in May, for a total of 155 miles. So far for April I only have 92.4 miles, so it will be a push to get 5 miles in every day!

Weight Lost This Month- 4.7
So it's been a month since my last weigh in. I got hit with a stomach bug two weeks in a row and life just seems to have been extra busy. But the good news is that I've lost 4.7 pounds! I do chalk at least half of that up to being sick. Not the way I want to lose weight, but I'll take it.
The weather has finally turned to spring, and I'm back to running outside. We started the 10 week Learn To Run Programme at Liam's school on Friday. My goal is to be ready to run a 10k by June. I was really feeling how out of shape I've gotten over the last month, and was glad that I was running with the newbies with a run 1 minute/ walk 1 minute intro. I hope to build up my endurance and speed by getting out and running at least 4 times a week.
I'm also back to TKD. I hope to test at the end of the month and there is a tournament the first weekend in May that I would like to enter. I've been so inconsistent with attending classes for the last 6 months, that I really need to not miss any being now and then. So far I'm 2 for 2!
I'm still drinking the Shakeology shakes for breakfast, but have stopped with the DVD workouts in lieu of running and TKD. I think they will make a nice back up if the weather is horrible, or I just don't have time for more then a 30 minute workout.
I'm hoping that April is the turning point and that I can keep to all my goals. What are your April goals?

Weigh in - March 9
Last Week's Weight - 218
Current Weight - 219.5
Weight Gained This Week - 1.5
Guess what!! I'm finally over my cold/sinus infection. I was even able to work out today, with a high intensity 30 minute aerobic video. Sure, my nose was a bit drippy, but since I'm in the privacy of my bedroom and not at a gym, I didn't really care.
Another gain this week caused purely by inactivity and comfort food. Now that I'm on the mend, I start again!! If I was able to lose 5lbs a few weeks ago, I'm sure I can start losing again this week.

Weigh In - March 2
Last Week's Weight - 216
Current Weight - 218.0
Weight Gained This Week - 2
Two steps forward, 1 step back.
This week's gain is really no surprise. I only exercised 3 out of the 7 days, I'm fighting a sinus infection and I turned to comfort food after a long, hard week of training at work and being sick.
I know that when I get back on track on Monday that I will continue to lose and improve. Overall I did lose a total of 2 pounds in February, bringing my total so far this year to 7 pounds lost. As long as these small gains don't outweigh the losses, then I'm happy.

Last Week's Weight - 221.3

Weight Lost This Week - 5.3
Well that is a loss I can get used to! I don't think I've ever lost 5 pounds in one week before.
This was a great week overall. I exercised every day for at least 30 minutes, using the BeachBody videos that came with my 21 day Fix package. I've never really been a fan of workout videos, but I have enjoyed these ones. It helps that they are only 30 minutes long, give you frequent 15-30 second breaks and offer modified versions of each exercise if you can't keep up.
I also had the Shakeology shake every morning for breakfast. It truly filled me up, helping me keep my overall calories each day between 1300-1700, lower then I've been able to get on my own. Even with the low calories I wasn't hungry. And even better, I didn't have any cravings all week. Often when I get Liam a snack of cheese or pretzels, I'll help myself to a few bites. But not this week, it just didn't seem interesting to me and I was already satisfied with what I had eaten. I even made it through Saturday and Sunday at home without any snacking.
I've committed to sticking with the shakes and workouts for 21 days, so 2 more weeks to go. I had set a slightly random goal of wanting to lose 15 pounds during the 21 days, something that I thought would be great to strive for, but didn't really believe I would be able to do it. After all, the most I've ever lost in a week before was 2 pounds. But after this mornings weigh in, I believe it might just be possible.

Lessons learned this week: While this is a life long journey I'm on, I can't take a week off and still be successful. I'm not yet at a place where I can let loose and not focus on the journey every day. No exercise this week and a binge day reflect that in a gain on the scales.
It also reflects more in how I felt about myself and my attitude. While seeing the numbers on the scale go down is great, it's not the whole story. I need to focus on feeling better, having more energy and simply being happy every day. I know that I feel better when I get more exercise. I know that I feel better when I don't binge on junk food. Yet I continue to sabotage myself. That is my goal for this week. I will not fall into that trap.
I will have a great week.

Weight Lost This Week - No Change
I'm celebrating a week of no change because it's a week of no gain!! I knew this would be a tough week to lose: No Wednesday TKD, we had desert (twice! And we never have desert), lunch out with work friends, and we had a car this weekend, so it meant that we splurged and ate take out on Saturday.
I am also celebrating the fact that I've lost 5.3 pounds in January! That is a pace that I can be happy with. If I lose 5 pounds every month I'll be down 60 pounds in a year!! That would be a great success.
So a new week begins. Meals are planned. Lunch is packed. I'm ready to get February on it's way.

This was not my most stellar week, with a lot of extra food that I knew I shouldn't eat, but enjoyed immensely. That to me is the point of this journey. Enjoy life, don't deny yourself anything, just keep it all within moderation.
Hilary and I are meal planning for the week before we head out grocery shopping today. Lamb stew, salads and chicken breasts, breakfast smoothies and steak are all on this week's menu. Sounds yummy!
Do you pre-plan your meals for the week?

Slow and steady wins the race!
It's so nice to get on the scale and see it going in the right direction. I'm not looking for the huge losses, because I know that it's not sustainable. If I can stick with losing a pound a week, I'll be quite happy.
Over all it was a good week. I didn't exercise as much as I would have liked to. I missed TKD on Wednesday due to leaving work late and bad traffic. And I just didn't have it in me to go for a run on Friday. Instead I went to the mall and walked around for an hour. Some movement is better then no movement after all.
The plan for this coming week is pretty much the same. The shopping is done and the meals are planned. TKD and running are penciled in.
I continue to BELIEVE that I can do this.

That's a great way to start things off!
Even though I was not 100% on plan with my eating this week, and had a couple of days that I was over my calorie goal, I still managed to lose 3 pounds. I'm sure that this is because I'm back to exercising. I managed to get in 3 days of Tae Kwon Do and 1 run this week. We are also back to not having a car for the first time in weeks, so I'm walking a lot more too.
My plan is to continue this week with more focus on making better food choices, especially snacking in the evenings.

Weigh in - January 5, 2014
Current Weight: 225
This is the first year since I started this journey in 2010 that I have finished the year at a higher weight then I started. Even though I got down to my lowest weight ever this summer, I have a net gain of 8 pounds overall.
Things went off the rails while we were on vacation in August. I enjoyed myself and didn't worry about calories or portions or not drinking alcohol every night. When we got home I never really got back into the swing of things, and it shows. I stopped wearing my pedometer; I stopped tracking my food; I didn't go to TKD 3 times a week; I had wine with diner; we ate out a lot. Little by little it all came together for a 25 pound weight gain in 4 months.
As discouraging as that sounds, I'm embracing it and moving on. I went to TKD yesterday and had a great time. I'm going to try and get out running twice a week (and by out I really mean in - at the track). I'm back to logging everything in MyFitnessPal. I've joined a great online group of women for a 6 week accountability support group. Hilary and I are planning out my lunches and our dinners to help me be successful.
And even though this is really the first week in, I did lose 1/2 a pound since last week. So the new journey begins.

Post Vacation Weigh In
Pre-Vacation Weight - 199.5
Current Weight - 207.8
Weight gained while on vacation: 8.3
No big surprise there!
I hit my lowest weight just before leaving after 5 weeks of bi-weekly fasting. There was certainly no fasting while on vacation for 2 weeks! There was Continental Breakfasts, ice cream stops, Tim Horton's Double Double (with 18% cream!), dinner out every night and a fair bit of alcohol.
There was some exercise, even though we did spend up to 6 hours a day in the car for half of the vacation. I got in the pool with Liam nearly every day, we walked a LOT at different touristy spots (and a lot of that up and down MOUNTAINS) and I even managed 3 short runs.
We are home now and I'll be back to work, Fasting and Tae Kwon Do this week. I've already gotten back to running, getting out twice already, with plans to go again today. I'm confident that the weight will come off again and that I'll continue to feel great.

Fasting Weigh In - Week 5
Last Week's Weight - 203.2

Weight Lost This Week: 3.7
It's been a long time in coming but the numbers on the scale finally start with a 1! 2 fasting days, 2 days of TKD, 1 run and eating well the rest of the week was the magic formula.
Of course we leave for vacation in 3 days. I won't be fasting while we are gone because a) it's vacation! and b) we will be in the car driving 6 hours a day for more than half of our vacation and I don't want to have to stop every 30 minutes to pee because I've consumed 3 litres of water.
I do plan to make good food choices while we travel. We'll be going through the Okanagan valley and hope to find lots of fresh fruits and vegetables. And of course once we hit the coast there will be fresh seafood. I'm going to take my running clothes with me in the hopes that I can get out at least once in each of the provinces that we'll be in for a run. We'll be staying near the water in BC and I think a run along the trail that borders the shoreline would be wonderful.

Another small gain this week. I only Fasted for a day and half. Thursday was Liam's Birthday so we went out for dinner and Hilary made her famous Chocolate Irish Potato Cake at his request. I don't usually Fast on Wednesday's because of TKD. I tried to Fast again on Friday to make up for it, but I did it without having something for breakfast before leaving home and by noon I was head-achy and starving in a way that water and positive thinking just wasn't going to over come.
Now the cakes (yes, he ended up having 2) are almost gone, we have no social eating plans for this week, TKD is on for Mon and Wed and the stars and planets are all aligned. This will be a great week!

No big surprise that I gained almost a pound this week. I had a 4 day weekend last weekend, and while I did Fast on Tuesday and Thursday, I certainly enjoyed more treats during the rest of the week then I should have.
We are in the midst of a heat wave, several days at 30C plus, even through the night. It certainly makes me lose my appetite for much beyond fresh fruit and water. Though I will confess that I have enjoyed some 67 calorie beer in the heat.
The journey continues!

The journey continues!

Fasting Weigh In - Week 2
Last Week's Weight - 204.8
Current Weight - 201.9
Weight Lost This Week - 2.9
It's great to see the weight loss continue this week! I fasted for 2 days this week but was pretty limited in my exercise. We didn't make it to TKD all week, but I did get out for a 40 minute run on Saturday. I also enjoyed a few too many treats Friday night, but that is the joy of the 5:2 Fast diet approach.
My goal this week is to get back to TKD and to try and run more. I may only fast one day this week as I've taken a vacation day on Tuesday to enjoy an extra long Canada Day weekend. We have lots of yummy, healthy meals planned for the week, so I'm okay with skipping one Fasting day and just watching what I eat the rest of the time.

Fasting Weigh In - Week 1
Starting Weight - 208.9
Current Weight - 204.8
Weight Lost This Week - 4.1
Even though I did 3 fasting days a few weeks ago, I am considering this my first official week. And what a great way to start off again! While I doubt that I will continue to lose at a rate of 4 pounds a week, I was very pleased when I got on the scale this morning.
I fasted on Tuesday and Thursday. I found both days to be fairly easy, with Thursday being the better of the two. On both days I had an egg white omelette before leaving for work and simply drank water and green tea throughout the day. My evening meals were yummy salads, including a great quinoa recipe that Hilary found for us on Thursday. I even went to Liam's end of school picnic on a fasting day and served hot dogs and ice cream for 2 hours before having a chance to eat my salad and I still wasn't starving by that point.
I really do see the sustainability of this plan. While I have watched what I eat on non-fasting days I have enjoyed ice cream, fried chicken, take away Chinese food, and a gourmet hamburger. I don't feel deprived in any way and it's very easy to tell myself to soldier on when a hunger pang does hit mid morning of a fasting day. Knowing that it's only for a few more hours makes it easy to handle and move on.
One thing that did come up that may or may not be related to fasting, is that I tested as anaemic when I went to donate blood yesterday. Their cut off for your iron level is 125somethings and mine was only 113. While I've been eating more meat and some dark leafy greens, I suspect that I'm not getting enough vitamin C for my body to be able to absorb the iron. I'm going to try to rectify that going forward.
We are already planning this week's fasting dinners, and I'm looking forward to another successful week.

Back at it
For the last two weeks I have not focused on weight loss. I didn't track my calories, I didn't worry about eating ice cream, I didn't wear my pedometer and count my steps. I also didn't go completely overboard, making healthy choices when I could. We've also had a car for the last 10 days which has meant no walking and a lot more fast food. My focus was on getting ready to run my first 5K.
So the results on the scale this morning were not at all surprising. In 2 weeks I gained 7 pounds. This week we are back to low carb meals and 2 days of Fasting. I anticipate that the weight will come off fairly quickly and I can get back to working towards my goal weight.
